Medical Face Masks
Canada's mask guidelines have changed, and it's important to understand why it might be a good time to upgrade your face mask.
With COVID-19 cases rising and the emergence of the omicron variant in Canada, it has been stated by the
Public Health Agency of Canada and Canada's top health professionals that medical masks and
respirators provide better protection than non-medical options.
Medical Respirator Face Masks Made In Canada
The most sought-after face mask that was once reserved for healthcare and frontline workers is now readily available for civilians and everyday consumers. The N95 medical face mask continues to be the most effective face mask to don when protecting ourselves against the coronavirus and omicron variant, and although vaccinations are currently being administered across the globe, Canada's top health officials are continuing to encourage and enforce medical face masks and N95 respirators, especially in crowded places or while travelling.

NIOSH Certified Masks
NIOSH-approved N95 masks must pass a rigorous inspection and certification process from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), which is part of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health will issue approval only to a specific, completed respirator after it has been evaluated by a certified laboratory and has been deemed to comply with public health regulations and requirements. The Food and Drug Association (FDA) regulates face masks, including cloth face coverings, and surgical face masks as medical devices when they are intended for medical use. Medical purposes include uses related to helping prevent the spread of COVID-19 and its variants. Face masks intended for use for non-medical reasons (i.e., construction sites or other industrial applications) are not considered medical devices.

What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 masks?
ASTM International sets the preferred international standard in healthcare for best practices inclusive of testing and requirements for the performance of materials. The Food and Drug Association (FDA) recommends that manufacturers demonstrate mask performance in 4 key areas; fluid resistance, differential pressure, filter efficiency and flammability.
ASTM Level 2 masks provide moderate barrier protection and are best suited for general use for short procedures and exams that don't involve aerosols, spray or fluids. ASTM Level 2 medical face masks are also a great option for everyday use.
ASTM Level 3 masks provide maximum barrier protection and are best suited for heavy levels of aerosols, spray and/or fluids. ASTM Level 3 medical face masks are also a great option for everyday use.
Overall, the difference in protection between an ASTM Level 2 face mask and an ASTM Level 3 face mask is minimal, but it's always best practice to equip yourself with the highest levels of protection when the risk of the environment you are in is unknown.
